Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Replaces GNOME Packagekit With Ubuntu Software Center

Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10 uses GNOME Packagekit (“Software”) as the default package management application, but this will change in Raring Ringtail.
A recent update in Ubuntu GNOME 13.04 Raring Ringtail (currently under development) has removed GNOME Packagekit from the default applications, replacing it with Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu’s Update Manager.
Ubuntu GNOME Remix Software Center

According to a post on a mailing list by Jeremy Bicha, the main Ubuntu GNOME developer, GNOME Packagekit is currently “pretty disappointing“, while Ubuntu Software Center is “one of Ubuntu’s best features with ratings and reviews, screenshots, app icons, access to commercial software, and decent search“, so even though this change will slightly affect the pure GNOME3 desktop experience that Ubuntu GNOME Remix is trying to achieve, it will definitely provide a better overall default experience.
Further more, this won’t be the first GNOME distribution that ships with its own software management application: Mageia and openSUSE do this too.
Also, as you probably know, Ubuntu GNOME Remix 12.10 includes the classic session by default (along with GNOME Shell, which is the default session, obviously). Well, the same 13.04 update brought another pretty major change: even though Ubuntu 13.04 is likely to ship with GNOME 3.6 for the most part, and not 3.8 (which will remove the fallback session), the classic (fallback) session packages were removed from the default Ubuntu GNOME Remix 13.04 Raring Ringtail installation.

makefiles: Complex conditional execution

While doing the conditional execution in makefiles, using only if and ifneq allows us to check for one condition but to be able to check multiple conditions one after another, we can use either if or ifneq after the else to check for further conditions.
Syntax:

ifneq(,) statements else statements endif

If the ifneq condition fails then the flow will go to the else and check the condition specified after the else. We can use as many else statements as we require.
Let us say we have three “c” programs, hello_1.c, hello_2.c and hello_3.c. We need to compile them depending on which user is running the make command. hello_1.c should be compiled if we are running make as root, hello_2.c if we are running make as “user1” and for any other user hello_3.c. This can be achieved by the following makefile.

CC = cc -o pf=hello user = $(shell whoami) ifeq ($(user),root) targets := $(pf)_1 else ifeq ($(user),user1) targets = $(pf)_2 else targets = $(pf)_3 endif $(targets):$(targets).c $(CC) $(targets) $(targets).c

In the above makefile, first variable “user” is compared with “root” then with “user1”. If both the conditions turn out to be false then the statements after the final else gets executed, which sets the targets to hello_3.c as required.

If we run the above makefile as root then we will get the output

cc -o hello_1 hello_1.c

If we run it as “user1” we will get the output

cc -o hello_2 hello_2.c

If we run it as any other user we will get the output

cc -o hello_3 hello_3.c

Install PPA-Purge With Multi-Arch Support In Ubuntu

The ppa-purge package available in the official Ubuntu repositories is not multi-arch aware, so purging PPAs like xorg-edgers or gnome3 doesn’t work correctly on 64bit systems.
A few hours ago, thanks to Tim Lunn’s work, a branch that adds multiarch support has been merged into the main ppa-purge branch, fixing this bug. The fix should be available in Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail soon, but I don’t know if it will be backported for older Ubuntu versions so to make this fix available for Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 users, I’ve uploaded the latest ppa-purge from BZR to the main WebUpd8 PPA.

For those not familiar with PPA Purge, this is a command line tool that downgrades all the packages installed from a PPA to the versions available in the official Ubuntu repositories.
